Vertigo and dizziness
Spinning and unsteadiness have different patterns. The history usually tells more than a tablet taken before any test.
What people notice
- The room spins when you roll in bed or look up.
- Spells with a headache, or with no headache at all.
- Unsteadiness while walking, sometimes with nausea.
Come in sooner if
- A new severe spin together with a sudden drop in hearing.
- Double vision, slurred speech, a weak arm or leg, or fainting. Call emergency services.
- A recent head injury, or you cannot stand.
How this clinic looks at it
- The history and the eye examination come first.
- Video nystagmography (VNG).
- Caloric testing of the balance canals.
- Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP).
What care can include
- Repositioning maneuvers when the pattern is benign positional vertigo.
